12 Days/11 Nights Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda Road Safari Package

Day 1: Arrival (Entebbe International Airport, Uganda)

You shall arrive at Entebbe International Airport where upon arrival, you will be welcomed and met by Dhahabu representative and transferred to your hotel.  The rest of the day is spent at leisure or sight-seeing Kampala city.

Day 2: Kampala – Kibale Forest National Park

Depart from Kampala after breakfast and proceed to Kibale Forest National Park, the most accessible of Uganda’s major rainforests. Kibale is home to a remarkable 13 primate species, including the much localized red colobus and L’Hoest’s monkey. Kibale’s major attraction, however, is the opportunity to track habituated chimps – these delightful apes, more closely related to humans than to any other living creature, and are tremendous fun to watch as they squabble and play in fruiting trees. The drive to Kibale will take you 4-5 hours arriving at your lodge in Kibale early afternoon in time for lunch and check in at your lodge. After lunch, you will have the afternoon free to relax or enjoy a nature walk in Kibale Park (Batooro and Bakiga) for cultural performances and traditional dances.  Return to lodge/camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking at Kibale Forest National Park

This is the day we have all been waiting for! Chimp trekking! After breakfast, you will assemble at your briefing point for your Uganda Chimpanzee tour. Your primate walk will start from Kanyanchu River camp in the morning and it will last for 2-4 hours.  It is the most popular walk, highlighting diversity of different animals and plants species within the forest. This walk is restricted to three groups of six persons each, in the morning and the same number in the afternoon. We will be searching for chimpanzees and other primates including the black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed and grey cheeked manga bays swinging through the dense forest and variety of bird species, butterflies and lots of insects in close quarters. Once amongst the Chimpanzees, spend approximately an hour observing and following them.Afternoon is spend at leisure to rest options of exploring the Bigodi Swamps, walk amongst the crater lakes, forests, or perhaps take a walk around the Farm (not included in the price).

Day 4: Kibale Forest National Park - Queen Elizabeth National Park

Depart to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a drive of approximately three hours. This park set in the Great Rift Valley is home to a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, hippos, buffalo, Uganda kob, baboon, and many species of birds.  With both a riverine and savannah habitat, the park includes the southern Ishasha area with its tree climbing lions and Maramagambo, one of the largest surviving natural forests in Uganda.  The northern Mweyaarea, traverses the equator and is dominated by the scenery of crater lakes, is often occupied by large flocks of flamingos. A boat trip from Mweya along the Kazinga Channel, which joins Lakes Edward and George, provides one of the most memorable experiences offered by the park.  A picnic lunch will be provided today.

Day 5 & 6: Full Day Exploring & Relaxing at Queen Elizabeth National Park

Days at leisure relax and also enjoy game viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Ishasha area is famed for its unusual tree-climbing lions. Wildlife in this Park includes Lions, Elephants, Leopards, Buffaloes, Hyenas and a variety of Antelope species. Enjoy the unique evening 2-hour launch cruise on Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward. The trip passes through the highest concentration of Hippos and many animals may be seen drinking at the water’s edge. The launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colorful and stupendous with well over 550 resident species.

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Depart from Queen Elizabeth National Park after breakfast and drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. On the way, we will stop at the Community Project at Ishasha Village. Here the local people allow you to enjoy some time in their homesteads, as well as see some of the crops and curios they produce, and visit the local elephant trench project – which stops elephants coming into the village and raiding crops.  Bwindi National Park, located in south western Uganda on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, is considered the most diverse forest in Uganda. Home to over 120 mammals, 345 species of birds, 200 species of butterflies, and 160 species of trees, Bwindi is one of the richest ecosystems in East Africa.  The park contains almost one half of the world’s population of the endangered Mountain Gorilla, making it an extremely valuable conservation site.

Day 8: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

It is a day we have all been waiting for...unforgettable and thrilling day! It is a rare opportunity to meet Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat, truly magical. After breakfast and briefing, experienced guides and trackers will accompany you on an early morning trek through dense rain forests on the mountain slopes. Gorilla tracking may be fairly strenuous with treks ranging from 1-8 hours searching for the gorillas depending on their movement. However meeting them is so rewarding and you will spend maximally 1 hour with them as you take time studying them and taking pictures and videos. After spending your time with the fascinating mountain gorillas, return to your lodge for lunch and refresh.

Day 9: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, depart for a second gorilla trekking experience with a picnic lunch.  Depending on the time we return to your lodge, relax at your lodge or opt for other activities like a visit to the village (optional).

Day 10: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)

After breakfast depart from Bwindi, and drive through the ‘Little Switzerland of Africa’ along winding mountain roads, and through rural villages, to the border of Rwanda, Kisoro.   Here, on a clear day, the Virgunas can be seen ‘standing sentry’ along the border – a row of massive, dormant volcanoes watching over the region. After crossing into Rwanda, we continue to our Gorilla Trekking base. Return to lodge/camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11: Volcanoes National Park - Kigali

After breakfast embark on gorillas trekking in the Volcanoes National Park.  It  is a very similar experience to that in Bwindi – just as challenging, equally memorable. If you’ve opted not to trek today, take a hike to Dian Fossey’s grave or enjoy forest walk with Golden Monkeys.  You will only be able to enjoy one of these activities (as they all take place in the morning) and pre-booking is essential.

After lunch, we drive to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda – a bustling, clean and safe city with an optional visit to the haunting Genocide Museum.
